The university was established in 1974 as Rawalpindi Medical College. It was initially affialited with University of Punjab. In 2003 it became affiliated with University of Health Sciences Lahore. In September 2017, college was upgraded to university status by Government of Punjab.
The current Vice Chancellor of Rawalpindi Medical University and allied hospitals is Prof. Muhammad Umar (Sitara-e-Imtiaz).
